Talkie: A Vintage Language Model from 1930
Join researchers Nick Levine and Alec Radford for a presentation on Talkie-LM, an AI language model trained strictly on pre-1931 books, newspapers, and archival print. Featured on the Hard Fork podcast, this talk explores how models reason without modern internet contamination, addressing key questions about historical simulation, data stewardship, and the ethics of digital archives.

Itziar Barrio: Workshop and Lecture on Working with AI
Interdisciplinary artist Itziar Barrio—recognized internationally for her artistic interventions at the intersections of art, film, robotics, and AI—will host a workshop, where she will screen two of her recent films addressing the influence of algorithms on western logic. Barrio will also hold a public lecture discussing her acclaimed Material trilogy and how the work challenges the scripts of authority by poetically interlacing discourses between scientists, technologists, fiction writers, actors, a bodybuilder, a robotics engineer, and a
composer, as well as non-human agents such as celestial bodies, robots, matter,
telescopes, and data.

Future AI&U Partner Events
Probable Realities, Non-existent Archives, Loss, Haunted Hallucinations of Gen AI
In this workshop, participants will work with an old virtual world environment – Secondlife – and the AI image generator – Midjourney. We will discuss and these explorations in relation to contemporary concerns and theoretical debates around gen ai and autonomy in production of identity in digital environments. The workshop is co-sponsored by Communication Arts; Havens Wright Center for Social Justice; Gender and Women’s Studies, and is scheduled for Thursday, February 18, 2027.
