AI x Humanity Panel
As AI advances rapidly, questions about its ethical, cultural, and social implications are more urgent than ever. This public panel organized by AI&U featured faculty who explore how AI intersects with meaning, knowledge, and human values (feat. Courtney Bell, Educational Psychology; John Curtin, Psychology, Jimmy Goodrich, Philosophy; and Catalina Toma, Communication Arts. Moderated by Jeremy Morris)
Xiaochang Li – Stanford University
Dr. Xiaochang Li from the Department of Communication gave a keynote lecture entitled “Unreasonable Effects: Speech Recognition, Language Models, and Algorithmic Knowledge.” Looking at the history of automatic speech recognition, her talk highlighted how the making of language into data in turn made data into an imperative, opening the door for the unchecked incursion of algorithmic authority into everyday life.
