Center Leadership

The Center’s Faculty Director benefits from the guidance of two groups, a Steering Committee and Advisory Board, which play distinct roles in ensuring that the Center produces enduring research about AI’s effects on humanistic values.

Dr. Morris is the Faculty Director for the Center for Humanistic Inquiry into AI and Uncertainty, and was a member of the Steering Committee which secured the Center’s funding and established the Center’s mission.

Dr. Morris’s research focuses on how new technologies affect the ways we make, understand, discover, and interact with cultural goods, especially music and podcasts. His most recent book, Podcasting (Polity Press, 2024), looks at the industrial, technological, economic, and aesthetic history of the podcasting industry from its beginnings in the late 1990s and early 2000s to its rise to a dominant, mainstream format. Dr. Morris’s research related to AI has focused on the ways in which musicians and the music industry are incorporating generative AI and other artificial intelligence technologies into their process for making music.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee is a multi-disciplinary faculty group who work on the political, ethical, legal, and societal implications of AI through various disciplinary perspectives. The Committee outlined what issues the Center’s research addresses as well as the broad methodology it adopts to do so. The Committee also contributed to the development of UW Madison’s Ethics of Data and AI Certificate.

Advisory Board

The Center also benefits from a standing Advisory Board of faculty directors and administrators who have helped launch the Center and will ensure it takes the steps needed to achieve its aims.
